My Favorite Location for Senior Photos: Rainbow Row Edition

If you’re searching for the perfect spot for your senior portraits in Charleston, there’s one location I come back to again and again: Rainbow Row.

With its iconic pastel homes, historic charm, and endless variety of colors, Rainbow Row is one of the most versatile and visually stunning backdrops for senior sessions and maybe it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite, but I'm going to tell you anyway!

One of the biggest questions seniors have when planning their session is:

“Where should I take my photos?”

The truth is, your location plays a huge role in the overall feel of your images. That’s why Rainbow Row stands out, it offers a unique combination of personality, elegance, and flexibility all in one place. It's also one of the most easily spotted iconic locations in all of Charleston which is why most choose to have their senior portraits done here.

What makes Rainbow Row so special is right in the name—rainbow. Sounds corny but as a photographer having this amount of variety all on one street is an absolute treat.

The row of historic homes features soft pastels like blush pink, mint green, sky blue, lavender, and buttery yellow, and more. This variety allows us to match your backdrop to your outfit and your personality.

  • Love soft, feminine tones? The pinks and creams are perfect.
  • Want something bold and vibrant? The brighter hues make your photos pop.
  • Prefer a classic, timeless look? Neutral tones and subtle textures are everywhere.

No matter your style, there’s a spot here that feels like you. It's also the perfect location to use without ever needing to drive to a second location for my clients that book The Highlights package.

Within just a short walk, you’ll find:

  • Colorful window boxes
  • Cobblestone Roads
  • Gas Lanterns
  • Charming doorways and windows
  • Beautiful natural light at different angles

This means your final gallery feels diverse and dynamic, even though everything was captured in one area of Charleston.

The Iconic Vista Views

A Doorway For Every Look

Timing is everything.

Lighting and foot traffic can completely transform your photos, especially in a location like this. It's one of THE busiest spots in all of Charleston. Because of this it's really important that we follow a strict start time of either sunrise or 2-3 hours before sunset.

Sunrise is a personal favorite for the quieter streets and less foot traffic making your session more efficient and still taking advantage of the gorgeous morning light. Alternatively the 2-3 hour window before sunset can be ideal for backlit alleyways but can also create a much longer shooting timeframe while having to shoot in between people walking by and other photographers.

Both options create a dreamy, flattering look that enhances the natural beauty of the area.

Cobblestone Streets

Bold Colors

Seasonal Florals

Out of all the beautiful locations in Charleston, Rainbow Row continues to be a favorite because it’s adapts to being a one-size-fits-all to hit all the boxes for my senior clients.

Every session here feels different while still including some of the exact same iconic spots. Every senior brings their own energy, style, and story—and this location allows that individuality to shine.
