Alena's Charleston Senior Session at Magnolia Gardens & Historic Downtown

There is something extra special about photographing two sisters, especially when I get to document another milestone for the same family years later. I photographed Alena’s older sister for her senior portraits three years ago, so getting to welcome Alena and her mom, Julie, to Charleston for her own senior session felt like such a full-circle moment.

Alena and Julie planned a mother-daughter girls’ trip to Charleston, combining a little time away together with an unforgettable senior portrait experience. When Alena fell in love with the iconic white bridge at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and the charm of historic downtown Charleston, I knew we could create a gallery that beautifully captured both sides of the city.

Julie chose The Compendium, my two-location senior photography experience, which gave us the opportunity to explore the romantic gardens of Magnolia in the morning and the historic streets of downtown Charleston in the afternoon. With five outfits, two completely different settings, and some of the most beautiful fall light, Alena’s session was the perfect example of how much variety we can create in a Charleston senior portrait experience.

Morning at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

I typically love beginning my Magnolia Plantation senior photography sessions at 9 a.m., right when the gardens open to the public. Starting early allows us to take advantage of the softer morning light and explore the grounds before they become busier.

October brought us a little unexpected adventure before we even began. Julie and Alena encountered an unfortunate flat tire on their way to the gardens, which delayed our start. Thankfully, the later sunrise that comes with fall worked in our favor, and we were still able to enjoy beautiful, magical light throughout our morning together.

What surprised me most was how quiet Magnolia was that morning. I hadn't expected to have so much of the property nearly to ourselves in October, but we were able to photograph almost uninterrupted for the better part of our two hours there. It was such a gift, allowing us to slow down, explore, and create portraits without feeling rushed.

Of course, we had to begin at the iconic white bridge. With its graceful lines, reflective water, and surrounding greenery, it is one of those unmistakably Charleston locations that never seems to lose its charm. Alena loved it just as much as I hoped she would!

From there, we wandered along the garden paths, finding beautiful pockets of light and greenery along the way. We also made our way to the grand driveway lined with towering live oaks, where the sweeping branches and timeless Lowcountry landscape created an entirely different feel for her portraits.

We finished our time at Magnolia near the historic home, taking advantage of the beautiful architecture and grounds to round out this portion of her gallery.

Alena wore three outfits during our time at Magnolia, giving us a lovely variety of portraits among the gardens, live oaks, and historic surroundings. I especially loved the idea of saving her white lace dress for downtown Charleston. I had a feeling its delicate details and romantic silhouette would be absolutely perfect against the city's historic architecture and cobblestone streets.

And I was right!

An Afternoon Exploring Historic Downtown Charleston

After wrapping up at Magnolia, we took a break before meeting again at 5 p.m. in Charleston's French Quarter for the second half of Alena's senior portrait session.

One of my favorite things about photographing senior portraits in Charleston is how dramatically the scenery can change within a single day. Magnolia offers lush gardens, winding paths, and that dreamy Lowcountry atmosphere, while downtown brings pastel facades, historic churches, centuries-old streets, and architectural details that feel effortlessly elegant.

We began near 25 Queen, one of my favorite downtown spots for portraits, before making our way toward the beautiful pink French Huguenot Church and the historic Dock Street Theatre. Each location offered something a little different, allowing us to create portraits that felt distinctly Charleston without making the gallery feel repetitive.

Then came one of my favorite moments of the entire session.

We walked along Chalmers Street, one of Charleston's beloved cobblestone streets, where the late-afternoon sunlight filtered through the trees. Alena changed into the white lace dress we had saved from the morning, and the combination of the glowing backlight, textured cobblestones, and historic surroundings was simply beautiful.

The light created that soft, luminous glow I love so much in outdoor senior portraits. Her white dress stood out against the warm tones of the street and the surrounding architecture, giving these portraits a romantic, almost European feel.

It was the perfect reminder that sometimes the most beautiful images happen when we pair the right outfit with the right location and let the natural light do its thing.

Ending with an Elevated Charleston Look

For the final portion of Alena's session, she changed into a long pink satin dress, bringing a more formal, polished feel to her downtown portraits.

We finished at Hibernian Hall and Charleston City Hall, two locations that lend themselves beautifully to a classic, editorial-inspired look. The architecture added a sense of grandeur, while the satin dress brought movement, elegance, and a little extra drama to the final images.

I love encouraging my seniors to incorporate at least one dressier outfit into their sessions. A flowing gown or satin dress can completely transform the look of a gallery, especially when paired with Charleston's historic buildings and timeless architectural details.

By the end of our time together, Alena had a collection of portraits that felt cohesive yet wonderfully varied. From the soft greenery of Magnolia to the romantic cobblestone streets and stately buildings downtown, every part of her session told a slightly different story.

Five Outfits, Two Locations, and So Much Charleston Charm

Alena's senior session included approximately four to four and a half hours of shooting time across two locations, with five outfits creating a beautiful range of looks throughout her gallery. One outfit was photographed in two different settings, giving us even more variety without needing to add another outfit change.
